Individuals who want to travel outside the US must have a current passport. If the person has never had one before, they are required to apply for a rush new pass port in person. The application requirements differ among adults, teens and children. What follows is an outline of the process for an adult application.

When applying for the United States travel document, one of the first things to do is locate the closest acceptance facility. These facilities are typically inside a post office, library or county clerk’s office. Check with the Department of State online to locate the office that is closest to you, even trying to use an expedited child American passport service.

There are specific documents that are needed as proof of your identity such as a driver license, state photo ID card, military certificate, or naturalization paperwork. An ID from another state will need to be accompanied by a social security card, credit card, library card or any other form of secondary ID. Be sure to make copies of your identification documents and take them with you to apply for your document.

It is also required that applicants show proof that they are United States citizens. A certified United States birth certificate, a citizenship certificate or naturalization papers can serve as proof. You will also need a current photo for your new travel document. There are several places to have these pictures taken, however, check to see if it is possible to have it taken at the acceptance facility. Many of the facilities are equipped to take photos.

Once the applicant has collected all documentation and has a photo taken, they will submit everything to the acceptance agency or post office. The applicant can save time by printing the correct form from the Internet and filling it in before visiting the agency. Keep in mind that the application must be signed when the agent instructs so that they can be a witness to the signature.

Authorized agents at the acceptance facilities review the documentation and take the required fee. Payment is accepted in check or money order only. From time to time the fees are adjusted so it is a good idea to check to see what the current amount is.

The completed application with all your documentation and pictures will then be sent to the United States Department of Sate to be processed. By paying extra for expediting the processing, you can receive your passport in about three weeks. Normal delivery of your travel document will take no less than six weeks.
